Nurses have also been utilizing and adapting technology to save lives for decades from the time of Florence Nightingale and earlier. The use of computers and machinery became imperative for nurses being the largest group of health care providers.
Nursing Informatics in Canada
Nursing Informatics (NI) is the application of computer science and information science to nursing. NI promotes the generation, management and processing of relevant data in order to use information and develop knowledge that supports nursing in all practice domains” (Canadian Nurses Association, 2001, p.1)(http://www.nursing-informatics.com/kwantlen/history.html). Nursing informatics in Canada began to evolve when the nurses participated in the initiatives in hospital information system adoption across the nation.The transition of these systems brought about specialized nursing components and free-standing nursing information systems. Most of the early systems have been imported from USA and others from other countries.
In 1998, Canadian Nurses Association initiated National Nursing Informatics project for the purpose of developing consensus on a definition of Nursing Informatics for Canada; recommending Nursing Informatics competencies for entry level nurses and specialists, managers, educators, and researchers; identifying curriculum implications and strategies for both basic and continuing education; and determining priorities for implementing national nursing informatics education strategies. The first phase of the project development started of a discussion paper on 1999 and a number of supportive documents released in 2001.

Nursing Informatics in Philippines
Nursing informatics were unfamiliar in the nursing community until year 2008. The Philippines Medical Informatics Society (PMI) and its founders strongly influenced the development of health informatics in the Philippines. in 1999, a group was formed headed by National Institute of Health of the University of Philippines in Manila. They provided standards for health information and their adaptability in the Philippines. The document was referred then as Standards of Health Information in the Philippines, 1999 version, or SHIP99. in 2008, the Nursing Informatics course in the undergraduate curriculum was defined by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Memorandum 5 Series of 2008 which was revised as Health Informatics by CHED Memorandum Order 14 Series of 2009. This was first implemented during summer 2010. Other programs are to be slowly delivered with Philippine Nursing Informatics Association's (PNIA) CORE X strategic platform which stands for Competency, Organization, Recognition, Experience and Expertise.
